Earlier this week, the federal government announced that the Airbus C-295 transport had been chosen as Canada’s next fixed-wing search and rescue plane.The $4.7 billion procurement process is intended to replace the nearly 50-year-old CC-115 Buffalos and CC-130 Hercules transport planes.

(November 17, 2016) – Today, the City of Port Alberni released the summary report from the design charrette for Johnston Road & Northport commercial area.  The project is bringing together diverse stakeholders and the City to generate a cohesive vision and coordinated approach for recommendations, improvements, and potential investments in the area.

The City of Port Alberni joins the community in honouring veterans on Remembrance Day. 

Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held on November 11th at Glenwood Centre at 10:15am. Following the Glenwood Centre ceremony, services will be held at The Field of Honour Greenwood Cemetery and the Harbour Quay Cenotaph honouring Merchant Navy Vets, followed by food and fellowship at the Legion Cenotaph.  

The ceremonies are organized by the Royal Canadian Legion's Port Alberni Branch 293.

Traffic on Highway 4 (Pacific Rim) is being rerouted due to flooding near Hector Road. A detour is in place via McCoy Lake Road, Stirling Arm Drive and Faber Road. Flaggers and detour signs are in place to direct traffic. Motorists should plan for approximately 10 - 20 minutes of additional travel time. The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a Flood Warning for the Sproat and Somass Rivers and the surrounding creeks and tributaries near Port Alberni.      

A Flood Warning means that river levels have exceeded bankfull or will exceed bank full imminently, and that flooding of areas adjacent to the rivers affected will result. While flooding of some areas along the Somass and Sproat Rivers is occurring, major flooding is NOT expected in the City of Port Alberni at this time.

The Royal BC Museum has dug deep into its collections to unearth powerful material about the First World War, creating a travelling exhibition that has set up camp at the Alberni Valley Museum.

The exhibition, called British Columbia’s War, 1914–1918, and which aims to educate British Columbians about the contributions of their forebears in the First World War, will be on display in the Alberni Valley Museum in from November 9, 2016 to mid-January, 2017.

As previously announced, emissions testing at the Cantimber Biotech facility is scheduled to take place November 7 - 10, with a mandatory warm-up procedure of its equipment starting Thursday, November 3rd. The City of Port Alberni is pleased to announce the appointment of Kelly Gilday as the new Fire Chief for the Port Alberni Fire Department (PAFD).  Mr. Gilday, currently Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Langley, will officially assume his new duties on November 28, 2016.
