The City of Port Alberni invites residents to participate in an eTown Hall Budget Meeting on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 6:30pm in Council Chambers.

While the event takes place in Council Chambers at City Hall (4850 Argyle Street), a new format means that comments and questions will be received from those in attendance at the meeting, as well as those viewing from the comfort of their home.

The City of Port Alberni is pleased to welcome Kamruz Zaman as the new City Engineer. 

Together with communities across the country, the City of Port Alberni is mourning the victims of the Quebec City mosque shooting.    The flags at City Hall have been lowered to half- mast in a gesture of solemn respect.

Mayor Mike Ruttan will be joining local faith leaders and other members of the community at a vigil planned for 5:30pm tonight in front of Port Alberni City Hall to demonstrate compassion and support for the families of those killed in Quebec City. The public is welcome to attend.  

 

The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has announced an upgrade to the Highway 4 crosswalk at Helen Street to a fully signalized intersection.

The project, estimated at $225,000, will begin in late January and is expected to finish by the end of March 2017.

Attention all young Canadians! The Canada Day Challenge is now accepting submissions of art, photography and creative writing to mark the 30th anniversary of the contest and the 150th anniversary of Confederation. Participants could win an all-expenses paid grand prize trip for two to Ottawa to celebrate Canada Day and take part in the activities. Entries are being accepted from January 3 to March 31, 2017.

An air quality advisory has been issued by the Ministry of Environment for Port Alberni and the Alberni Valley due to high concentrations of fine particulates that are expected to persist until weather conditions change. Open burning restrictions are now in effect for the Alberni Valley for a period of 3 days. 

BC Transit and the City of Port Alberni want to ensure you get home safe this New Year’s Eve by offering free transit service on December 31, 2016 from 10:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m.

BC Transit customers in Port Alberni should also be aware of the following holiday schedule:

December 24 – Regular service

December 25 – No service

December 26 – Sunday service

Earlier this week, the Port Alberni Port Authority publicly released the evaluation of operations and emissions at the Cantimber Biotech facility. The evaluation was conducted by Golder Associates, an independent consulting firm with expertise in emission measurement and controls and air quality permitting.

The report provides a thorough review of Cantimber’s operation with key findings and recommendations regarding the facility operation, emissions testing, air quality, and other regulatory considerations.

The Red Cross in Port Alberni is currently looking for Client Service volunteers for their Health Equipment Loan Program and a Disaster Response volunteer for their Disaster Management Program.

Client Service:  Volunteer needed to work with clients and health care professionals to fulfil equipment requests.  Must be able to maintain paper and/or computer records regarding loans and returns, respond to phone enquiries regarding the Health Equipment Loan Program and other Red Cross programs and receive financial donations.

Mayor Mike Ruttan announced today that City Council has appointed a new Multiplex and Sports Facilities Supervisor, Laurie L’Heureux.

The appointment is a lateral transfer from L’Heureux’s current position as the Echo Aquatic and Facility Supervisor, and will result in the reduction of a management position as the vacated position will not be filled.
