Council for the City of Port Alberni is inviting applications from interested parties to sit as Directors on the McLean Mill Society for the remainder of 2019.
The McLean Mill Society was incorporated on December 8, 2016 with the purpose of undertaking operation and management of the McLean Mill National Historic Site as outlined in the Society’s Constitution and in keeping with its Bylaws.
PORT ALBERNI, British Columbia, Canada – The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) School of Community and Regional Planning has released their final findings on the public and official perceptions of the January 2018 tsunami warning evacuation in the Alberni Valley.
The City of Port Alberni and the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) have been working with Dr. Ryan Reynolds, Post Doctoral Research Fellow with the School of Community and Regional Planning, to gain a better understanding of people’s experiences during the January 23rd event.
Upcoming Construction
To address the aging infrastructure and protect the environment from unnecessary combined sewer overflows, the City of Port Alberni is separating the sewer and stormwater collection systems in your neighbourhood and upgrading a section of water main that has reached the end of its service life.
The City of Port Alberni is happy to announce the hiring of Katelyn McDougall, M. Urb as the new manager of planning.
Ms. McDougall holds a Masters of Urban Studies with the Simon Fraser University and has an extensive background in public engagement as the principal and managing director with OfCity Consulting and more recently as the public engagement specialist with the City of New Westminster.
Background
As you may know, on September 19, 2018, the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association undertook the decommissioning of an aging sluice gate (a valve that controls water flows through a dam) in the McLean Mill Log Pond. Indications of poor water quality in the log pond became apparent during a planned discharge which resulted in the isolation of the pond.

On September 4, 2018, Council for the City of Port Alberni unanimously passed a motion to award the main construction contract for the upcoming Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades project to Tritech Group for $17,128,429.53 plus GST - the largest construction contract awarded in the City of Port Alberni’s history.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades project (the Project) is slated to break ground in late September/early-October 2018, and will take approximately two years to complete. When complete, the Project will:

On August 13, 2018, City of Port Alberni Council will consider a motion to enter into an agreement with the Tseshaht First Nation. This agreement would see the two governments pursue a partnership in the development of a Tseshaht art piece and interpretive signage for the Harbour Quay Clock Tower.
This collaboration would recognize the historic Tseshaht winter village of Tlukwatku-is (Wolf Ritual Beach) near Harbour Quay, honour the wolf as the fundamental holder for the Tseshaht Law of Harmony and celebrate Alberni Valley’s rich local history and culture.
