Port Alberni - April 16, 2025 - On Sunday, April 13, 2025, the City of Port Alberni was alerted to a technical issue with the Alberni Valley Multiplex ice plant, the refrigeration system responsible for creating and maintaining the ice surfaces in the facility. Out of an abundance of caution, the city followed protocol and immediately shut down the ice plant, closed the facility and called Fraser Valley Refrigeration, its certified contracted technician, to assess the system’s operations.
PORT ALBERNI, BC, April 8, 2025 – Port Alberni is set to reclaim its waterfront with the signing of the Somass Lands master development agreement between the City of Port Alberni and Matthews West Developments Ltd. (Matthews West), a private Canadian development company based in Squamish, BC.
In 2023 the City of Port Alberni selected Matthews West as the development partner for the transformation of the 43-acre waterfront property and adjacent parking lot (the Lands), previously known as the Somass Division sawmill.
Port Alberni, BC –The City of Port Alberni and their unionized workers, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 118, have reached a three-year collective agreement.
The agreement was ratified by Local 118 members on Monday, March 31, 2025, and by City of Port Alberni Council on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. The new contract covers the period beginning January 1, 2024, and will expire on December 31, 2026.

Port Alberni, BC – On March 5, 2025, City of Port Alberni staff with the help of local contractors will erect the long-awaited ‘Welcome to Port Alberni’ sign on city-owned land at the corner of Highway 4 and John Street, adjacent to the Walmart parking lot.
“This welcome sign has been on the city’s agenda for years and with the help of local First Nations, contractors and artists it has finally become a reality,” said Sharie Minions, mayor of Port Alberni.
Port Alberni, BC – Since 2022 c̓išaaʔath ̣ (Tseshaht First Nation), Hupačasath First Nation, and City of Port Alberni have participated in the First Nations – Municipal Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI) through the creation of a CEDI Working Group.
The City is excited to support the Port Alberni Port Authority (PAPA) and Port Boat House in a new lease agreement that will see Port Boat House expand its yard into the adjacent parking lot (behind 5410 Argyle Street) owned and maintained by PAPA (see map below). This expansion, however, will see a short 50-meter section of the Quay to Quay pathway impacted as a result.
Port Alberni, BC – On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at 8 a.m. the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 118 served the City of Port Alberni with 72-hour strike notice.
The City and CUPE Local 118 have been involved in the collective bargaining process in an effort to achieve a new collective agreement between the parties. At this time a new agreement has not yet been reached.

Port Alberni, BC – In response to the lead testing conducted in local schools by Pacific Rim School District in late 2024, the City took it upon itself to conduct testing at older City facilities to ensure drinking water meets the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality.
