Port Alberni, BC – The City is pleased to announce a partnership with Ahousaht First Nation on a development project that will provide affordable housing for Indigenous citizens.

The Province, through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund, has recently announced a significant investment in support of a new housing project. The development site, provided by the City, is located at 4210 Cedarwood Street [formerly Cedarwood School], and will involve construction of a four-storey wood frame building comprised of 35 units within walking distance of schools, child care, public transit, playing fields, stores, and services. In advance of construction a formal public engagement process will take place as the proposed development will require amendments to the City’s Official Community Plan and Zoning bylaws.

"On behalf of Council for the City of Port Alberni, I thank the Province for another significant investment in our community,” said Mayor Sharie Minions. “We also wish to thank project partners Citaapi Mahtii [Housing] Society, Ahousaht First Nation, BC Housing, and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for their dedication and commitment to creating housing for Indigenous citizens in Port Alberni. Housing is the foundation on which people build their lives. Providing safe, secure and affordable housing for all is an essential component of building a healthy, thriving community. All residents should have access to housing that improves their quality of life and we recognize the importance of housing that reflects the unique needs of Indigenous citizens whether they live on-or-off-reserve,” concluded Mayor Minions.

The development, set to be completed in 2023 is one of a number of provincially supported housing projects that are in progress within the community. A map showing the location of all announced provincially-funded housing projects in B.C. is available online: https://www.bchousing.org/homes-for-BC
