City Renames Public Park after the late John Douglas, City Councillor & Former Mayor

August 7, 2024

Port Alberni, BC – The City, in conjunction with Tseshaht First Nation, has renamed Canal Waterfront Park to John Douglas Park at t̓iipis to honour the passing of the late John Douglas, Councillor and Former Mayor, and to also recognize the park as traditional Tseshaht territory. t̓iipis means ‘thrown up beach’ or ‘Polly’s Point’.

Canal Waterfront Park was a place of significance for John. He advocated for over a decade to turn the former industrial site into a waterfront park. His vision was realized in 2013 when John, in his role as Mayor, along with Council, made the decision to convert the former mill site into a park which opened to the public in 2013, and was officially named Canal Waterfront Park in 2014.

John also spearheaded the annual Polar Bear Swim, which takes place at the park the first day of the new year.

“John’s commitment to reconciliation inspired many forward-facing initiatives acknowledging the unceded territory (Alberni Valley) of Tseshaht First Nation. Today our Nation is honoured to once again stand on this land as it is newly renamed, ensuring Tseshaht’s cultural and historical connections are upheld alongside a man that gave so much to this community. John Douglas Park at t̓iipis will be a reminder to us all that with passion and foresight, reconciliation is possible. John, we say to you, ʔuušy̓akšiƛeʔic (Thank you; to appreciate a gift or deed)”– Wahmeesh (Ken Watts), Elected Chief Councillor, Tseshaht First Nation

“John dedicated his life to making Port Alberni a better place and was passionate not just about Canal Beach but opening up all areas of waterfront around the City to create vibrant spaces for visitors and residents to enjoy,” said CAO Mike Fox. “Canal Beach is a perfect example of his tireless vision and hard work come to fruition. I’m very pleased to be renaming the park in memory of John.”

Tseshaht First Nation will be adding artwork to the sign featuring whales at a future date.
