City Responds to RCMP Release of Autopsy Findings

Port Alberni, BC - Mayor Sharie Minions has issued a statement following confirmation earlier today that an autopsy has confirmed the bodies found near Gillam, Manitoba are those of Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky:

“I hope the additional information provided by the RCMP today will answer some of the questions facing the families who have been struck by the tragedy which unfolded last month in northern British Columbia.

There may never be enough information to adequately answer all of their questions, but our Council remains committed to supporting the RCMP as they complete their investigation into what led to this tragic series of events. We understand that it will take time for additional analysis and investigation to be complete, and we are confident this information will eventually be made public. Our thoughts and sympathies are with those impacted.

Once again, on behalf of the City of Port Alberni, I would like to express my thanks to members of the RCMP and other government agencies who have worked on this difficult case.

Also, I would like to remind our residents that the Alberni Valley has numerous supports available to its residents. I encourage anyone struggling at this time to take advantage of the services.”
