What’s that Sound? Public and Official Perceptions of Recent Tsunami Warning and Mass Evacuation

The City of Port Alberni and the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District are working with the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) School of Community and Regional Planning to gain a better understanding of people’s experiences during the recent tsunami warning.

Starting Wednesday, April 4, 2018, two UBC researchers will be knocking on doors in Port Alberni’s inundation zone to gather data on what worked well and what difficulties were experienced during the evacuation. The information gathered will:

  • Optimize how evacuations are conducted in the future
  • Help create more tsunami-resilient communities across Canada.

If your home is selected, you will be asked to complete a brief survey about your impressions of the recent tsunami warning and evacuation. Questions will include when you first heard about the warning, and how your household responded, among others.

The input you provide is important to us, so please take the time to complete the survey. Your responses will help us understand how to serve the community during a disaster better.
