City Announces Transition in Animal Control Services

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Port Alberni, BC – December 19, 2025 - The City of Port Alberni wishes to inform residents that the contract with the BC SPCA for animal control services will conclude on December 31, 2025. In an effort to align with budgetary considerations, annual funding for these services was reduced.

Despite collaborative discussions, the City and the BC SPCA were unable to establish a service model that aligns with the new budget parameters. In light of this, the city will initiate a request for proposals to identify a new operator for animal control services.

To ensure continued support for animal control during this transition period, the City of Port Alberni will engage Coastal Animal Control Services of BC Limited, based in Duncan, on a contract basis.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the BC SPCA for their years of dedicated service to the City of Port Alberni. The SPCA will remain active in the community, continuing their essential work and providing care for animals.
