City Welcomes Ideas For Its First Parks, Recreation & Culture Master Plan

Friday, September 20, 2024

Port Alberni, BC – City of Port Alberni residents are invited to share their ideas for the future of parks, recreation and culture services in the community. Ideas received will help shape the City’s first Parks, Recreation & Culture (PRC) Master Plan which will guide decision-making and investment in PRC services over the next seven years and beyond.

"Council is thrilled to launch this important community process to shape the future of parks, recreation, and culture in Port Alberni,” said Mayor, Sharie Minions. “We want to hear from all residents about how we can create inclusive and sustainable spaces and experiences for everyone to enjoy. This is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together and help us Plan for Play in PA!"

“We are very excited to kick off this community process to explore parks, recreation and culture in the City today and develop a strong vision and plan for the future,” said Willa Thorpe, Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture. “With Port Alberni continuing to evolve, it is important we consider community needs, emerging trends, and opportunities to provide quality spaces and experiences for our residents to enjoy.”

The first phase of engagement is focused on gathering input from the community, including how our community uses City parks, trails, recreation and cultural facilities and programs today, and our resident’s ideas for a future system that is inclusive and sustainable. Initial input will inform draft directions to be explored in Phase 2 of the process, planned for spring 2025.

Residents can share their input from now until October 25. Drop by the Connect with your City Open House on Wednesday, September 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Echo Centre (4255 Wallace Street) to speak with the project team. There is also a community survey and a community mapping activity available at events and online at letsconnectpa.ca/PRCMP. The City will also be engaging with First Nations and local interest groups.

Thorpe said, “We encourage everyone to come out and help Plan for Play in PA! With this being the City’s first PRC Master Plan it’s really important to hear all the ideas that Port Alberni residents have. We’re excited to create a strong foundation for our future PRC services.”
