Brief Explanation of Project
In 2021 the Accessibility British Columbia Act (ABCA) was enacted to foster an inclusive environment and remove barriers for people with disabilities. The City of Port Alberni has partnered with the ACRD to establish a regional Accessibility Committee and develop an accessibility plan. Advertisements inviting folks to apply to join the committee will appear in the newspaper beginning Dec 13th, as well as on social media platforms. Additionally, a Request for Proposals has been issued inviting consultants to submit proposals to assist in developing the plan and creating a mechanism to receive feedback. Committee members will be appointed by the ACRD Board of Directors on, or after, January 24, 2024.
Update Feb 29, 2024. Accessibility members have been appointed by the ACRD Board, with the first meeting taking place on March 5, 2024. The consultant, Left Turn Right Turn Ltd, has been hired. They have initiated the process of plan development by performing site visits to several City facilities. In addition, the consultants have set up a variety of staff engagement sessions the week of March 11th, to discuss accessibility.
