Brief Explanation of Project

Four startup companies across Canada were awarded seed funding from the Ocean Startup Project for their proposed solutions to challenge/problem statements.  Ocean Aid (BC) was awarded $7,000 for a proposal to harness the power of sonar and AI to detect and map locations of ghost fishing gear underwater so that it can be retrieved.  BioLabMate (NL) was awarded $7,000 for a proposal to replace single-use plastic waste from research labs and medical facilities using ocean-based materials for a greener future.  Aquarius (QC) was awarded $7,000 for a proposal to develop a technology to avoid trawler seabed scraping and reduce fuel consumption in the fishery industry.  Project R3D (NL) was awarded $1,500 for a proposal to recycle ocean plastic waste to produce filament for 3D printers.

Port Alberni, Rimouski, QC., and Yarmouth, NS partnered with the Ocean Startup Project (funded by Canada’s Ocean Supercluster) to run the competition.
