Port Alberni, BC - February 27, 2026 – The City of Port Alberni is advising residents that, following a procurement process, the City has awarded its animal control services contract to Coastal Animal Control Services of BC Limited (Coastal Animal Control). Coastal Animal Control is headquartered in Duncan, BC, and will begin providing services in Port Alberni effective March 1, 2026.
“Maintaining community safety and ensuring timely, professional response to animal control concerns are important priorities for the City,” said Andrew McGifford, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Port Alberni. “We look forward to working with Coastal Animal Control Services as they establish a local presence in Port Alberni and continue providing residents with responsive service during this transition.”
A transition period will be in place throughout March 2026. During this time, Coastal Animal Control will prioritize:
• Response and management related to dangerous dogs; and
• Pickup and management of stray animals, as required.
To ensure continuity of service during the transition, stray animals will be accommodated through fee-for-service arrangements with local service providers.

In the coming months, Coastal Animal Control will work toward establishing a fully staffed animal control facility within the City of Port Alberni to support local service delivery and improve response capacity.
The City extends its sincere appreciation to the BC SPCA for its many years of dedicated service to the Port Alberni community, including support during the transition period. The BC SPCA will continue to operate in Port Alberni, providing essential animal care and support services.
