The Port Alberni Detachment

• is located at 4444 Morton St., Port Alberni, BC
• encompasses approximately 1528 sq.miles of west central Vancouver Island
• includes 4 First Nations communities (Hupacasath, Tseshaht, Huu-ay-aht and Uchucklesaht)
• Operates a Community Policing Office using trained volunteers

The approximately 25,000 residents of the City of Port Alberni and the surrounding Alberni Valley are served by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Port Alberni Detachment:

• 54 officers
• 21 support staff (full time municipal employees and public civil servants)
• 30+ volunteers serving in programs such as, Crimestoppers, Speed Watch, Crime Watch Patrol(COPS), Police Chaplan and Victim Services.

As part of Canada’s national police service, the RCMP in Port Alberni are committed to promoting safe communities through the implementation of viable and meaningful crime prevention initiatives. An established Crime Reduction Strategy has proven to target prolific and high risk offenders. A key component of the strategy is the collaboration with key community services, departments and resources. This will ensure that the citizens of the Alberni Valley enjoy a high standard of public safety.

Police Information Checks

Police Information Checks are available and accepted at the Front Counter of the Port Alberni Detachment office (link is external)and are usually processed within two weeks.  There are circumstances where your Police Information Check may take much longer, ie. if fingerprints are required to be submitted and sent to Ottawa, or if we need to contact another  police agency for information.

If you are a volunteer for an organization that requires a Police Information Check, the fee will be waived.  In order to have this fee waived,  you will be required to present a letter from the organization confirming your volunteer status.

Two pieces of government issued ID are required, one showing a current Port Alberni address. 

Online Crime Reporting (link is external)  (link is external)

You can use Online Crime Reporting if:

• You have lost something that costs less than $5000
• Someone has stolen something from you that costs less than $5000
• Someone has vandalized your property or vehicle and it will cost less than $5000 to repair it
• The crime happened within the jurisdiction of the Port Alberni RCMP
• You want to report a Driving Complaint that is not in progress

You cannot use Online Crime Reporting if:

• There is a witness or suspect (this restriction does not apply to Driving Complaints)
• There are lost or stolen items involving personal identity or firearms
• There are lost or stolen licence plates or decals
